Porto
Porto, Portugal: the weather, the air, the distance to the coast and what a month costs, each with its source. This page assesses no one.
This page describes the destination for nobody in particular. Answer a few questions and each requirement is set against your own answers, with a monthly budget for your household. Your answers stay in the address bar of your browser; nothing is stored.

Each cell: average daily high, monthly mean, average daily low, in °C. These are averages of daily values over 2001–2020, not records — the hottest day is higher and is not shown.
How near the sea is
1.7 km
Straight-line distance from this city’s coordinates to the nearest coastline, computed from Natural Earth 1:10m Physical Vectors — Coastline (ne_10m_coastline) v5.1.2 at 1:10,000,000. Natural Earth is public domain, and anyone can download the same file and get the same number.
It is a distance and not an access. A city 8 km from the coast across a mountain ridge is not 8 km from the sea in any sense you would use, and the figure says nothing about what is on that coast — a container terminal and a bay give the same number. The coastline is the outline of the dataset’s land, so a river wide enough to separate land counts as coast.

A month here, for a reference household
Reference household: two adults aged 38 and 37, a one-bedroom home, no children.
Residence fees and health cover are those of EU/EEA free movement (register within 30 days after three months). The low, middle and high figures are the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles where a publisher states them; each line says who published it.
illustrative Money figures on this page are illustrative unless the figure names its publisher. The illustrative ones are arranged so the shape is right — a larger flat costs more than a smaller one, and the expensive cities are the expensive ones — and they are accurate in nothing. Do not plan on them.
This comparison is wider than your screen — scroll it sideways to see the remaining columns.
| Line | P25The lower quartile of the estimate range: a quarter of observations fall below it. Read it as the cheaper end of what is realistic, not as a bargain you can count on. | P50The middle of the estimate range: half the observations fall below it and half above. It is the figure to read first — not a promise, but the most representative single number we have. | P75The upper quartile of the estimate range: a quarter of observations fall above it. Budget against this one if you want room to be wrong. | Basis |

| Rent* | not published | €318 | not published | Average of published figuresPublished by Instituto Nacional de Estatística, IP (Portugal) More about this figurePorto, observed 2 October 2026Measured in 2021.Covers every rented home in the city, including tenants who signed years ago. This figure covers rented homes of every size in the city, so it does not change with the number of bedrooms a household needs.Rents in existing contracts — a newcomer is usually asked more.Shown here and kept out of the ranking: the same office also measures what people signing a new lease now pay, and that is the figure this city should be ranked on. |

| Groceries* | not published | €208 | not published | Average of published figuresPublished by Instituto Nacional de Estatística, I.P. (INE) More about this figureAdults: 2 · children: 0Measured in 2023.An average of what surveyed households actually spent — not a price anyone is charged, and it carries whatever mix of tariffs, dwellings and consumption those households had.Whose spending this is: Per person, per month, averaged over every private household resident in Norte: IDEF 2022/23's food bill per household divided by INE's 2021 Census mean household size for the same region. IDEF's household is the people «cujas despesas fundamentais ou básicas (alimentação, alojamento) são suportadas conjuntamente»; the Census counts «Todas as pessoas residentes no alojamento». The divisor counts everyone in one dwelling, and a dwelling can hold more than one household that shares a budget, so the divisor is somewhat larger than the survey's own household and this per-person figure reads a little low. The region stands in for the city, and a child is charged the same as an adult.Published per year; shown per month (÷ 12).This is the survey’s average person. Food has strong economies of scale, and the publisher states one figure per person and no split by household size — so a larger household is charged here as though each member shopped alone.3,206 EUR a year per household (2022/23) ÷ 2.57 people per household (2021), both published by Instituto Nacional de Estatística, I.P. (INE); the household size is the publisher’s household statistic, which counts everyone living in one dwelling, not the survey’s ownShown here and kept out of the ranking: the period it measures ended more than three years ago. |

More about this figureAdults: 2Measured in 2026.A price the publisher states is in force, not a statistic about a market. What this price is for: One person's monthly Andante Municipal pass, valid on every operator of the Andante system — Metro do Porto, STCP buses and CP urban trains — within the zones of one municipality, Porto for a Porto resident. Not the Andante Metropolitano (40 €), which covers the whole metropolitan area. This is the price the publisher charges, so there is no range: the low and high figures are the price itself. |

No premium is charged. Medicines co-payments, dentistry and unreferred hospital-emergency fees are not in this figure. This is the price the publisher charges, so there is no range: the low and high figures are the price itself. |

Lei n.º 85/2009 art. 3.º n.º 1: "No âmbito da escolaridade obrigatória o ensino é universal e gratuito." N.º 2 states what the free-ness covers: "propinas, taxas e emolumentos relacionados com a matrícula, frequência escolar e certificação do aproveitamento" — enrolment, attendance and certification. It does not state that meals, transport or materials are free. This is the price the publisher charges, so there is no range: the low and high figures are the price itself. |

| Statutory levies and licences* | €3 | €3 | €3 | Published figurePublished by Assembleia da República — Lei n.º 30/2003, artigo 4.º n.º 1 More about this figurePer householdMeasured in 2026.A price the publisher states is in force, not a statistic about a market. What this price is for: The contribuição para o audiovisual, per month, charged on the household's electricity supply. Lei n.º 30/2003 art. 4.º n.º 1: "O valor mensal da contribuição é de 2,85(euro)." Art. 3.º n.º 2 puts it on the supply of electricity and makes it monthly, so a household renting one dwelling with one supply pays it once. VAT at the reduced rate is added on the invoice and is not in this figure. The reduction to EUR 1 for five social-benefit groups (n.º 2) and the exemption below 400 kWh a year (n.º 4) are not applied, because the intake holds neither fact. This is the price the publisher charges, so there is no range: the low and high figures are the price itself. |
