Leipzig

Leipzig, Germany: the weather, the air, the distance to the coast and what a month costs, each with its source. This page assesses no one.

This page describes the destination for nobody in particular. Answer a few questions and each requirement is set against your own answers, with a monthly budget for your household. Your answers stay in the address bar of your browser; nothing is stored.

How near the sea is

291.2 km

Straight-line distance from this city’s coordinates to the nearest coastline, computed from Natural Earth 1:10m Physical Vectors — Coastline (ne_10m_coastline) v5.1.2 at 1:10,000,000. Natural Earth is public domain, and anyone can download the same file and get the same number.

It is a distance and not an access. A city 8 km from the coast across a mountain ridge is not 8 km from the sea in any sense you would use, and the figure says nothing about what is on that coast — a container terminal and a bay give the same number. The coastline is the outline of the dataset’s land, so a river wide enough to separate land counts as coast.

Air through the year

Leipzig, 2025: PM2.5 averaged over 3 reference monitor(s) within 25 km. The World Health Organization’s guideline is 5 µg/m³ and its first interim target is 35.

A month here, for a reference household

Reference household: two adults aged 38 and 37, a one-bedroom home, no children.

Residence fees and health cover are those of EU/EEA free movement (no registration required). The low, middle and high figures are the 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles where a publisher states them; each line says who published it.

illustrative Money figures on this page are illustrative unless the figure names its publisher. The illustrative ones are arranged so the shape is right — a larger flat costs more than a smaller one, and the expensive cities are the expensive ones — and they are accurate in nothing. Do not plan on them.

This comparison is wider than your screen — scroll it sideways to see the remaining columns.

The lower quartile of the estimate range: a quarter of observations fall below it. Read it as the cheaper end of what is realistic, not as a bargain you can count on.
P50
Full entry
The middle of the estimate range: half the observations fall below it and half above. It is the figure to read first — not a promise, but the most representative single number we have.
P75
Full entry
The upper quartile of the estimate range: a quarter of observations fall above it. Budget against this one if you want room to be wrong.

Per householdMeasured in 2023.An average of what surveyed households actually spent — not a price anyone is charged, and it carries whatever mix of tariffs, dwellings and consumption those households had.Whose spending this is: The average private household in the Free State of Saxony, per household per month, Einkommens- und Verbrauchsstichprobe 2023. It is Saxony and not Leipzig: the smallest area this survey is published for is the Land. Destatis publishes no average household size per Land in this report. It is every private household, renting or owning.

Adults: 2 · children: 0Measured in 2023.An average of what surveyed households actually spent — not a price anyone is charged, and it carries whatever mix of tariffs, dwellings and consumption those households had.Whose spending this is: Per person, per month, averaged over every private household in Germany in 2023 — Einkommens- und Verbrauchsstichprobe 2023. It is the national figure and not Berlin's or Saxony's, and the reason is worth knowing: Destatis publishes the food bill per household for each Land (Berlin EUR 355, Sachsen EUR 351) but states the persons per household only for Germany as a whole. A regional bill divided by a national count would mix two populations, which DESIGN CHANGE 39 (b) forbids, so the whole division is done nationally and the result is a labelled national proxy. It is the average person in the survey and not the average adult: a child is charged the same, because Destatis publishes one figure per person and no split by age. This is the survey’s average person. Food has strong economies of scale, and the publisher states one figure per person and no split by household size — so a larger household is charged here as though each member shopped alone.388 EUR a month per household ÷ 2 people per household, both published by Statistisches Bundesamt (Destatis)

Adults: 2Measured in 2026.A price the publisher states is in force, not a statistic about a market. What this price is for: The Deutschlandticket: one person's personal, non-transferable subscription ticket, valid on all local and regional public transport in Germany, cancellable monthly: «Digital, bundesweit gültig und monatlich kündbar».This is the price the publisher charges, so there is no range: the low and high figures are the price itself.

Per householdMeasured in 2026.A price the publisher states is in force, not a statistic about a market. What this price is for: The Rundfunkbeitrag, per month, for one dwelling: "Grundsätzlich sind je Wohnung monatlich 18,36 Euro Rundfunkbeitrag zu zahlen. Wie viele Menschen in der Wohnung leben, spielt keine Rolle." It is owed for the dwelling and not for a television, so it needs no fact about what the household owns. Where several households share one flat they pay one between them — "Sowohl Singles als auch andere Lebens- und Wohngemeinschaften zahlen nur einen Rundfunkbeitrag" — so a reader who shares is overcharged here by up to this whole line. Exemptions for named benefit recipients are not applied, because the intake holds no such fact. This is the price the publisher charges, so there is no range: the low and high figures are the price itself.

It is the sum of what we hold, not of what the household will pay.No low or high total, because the spread of these lines was never published: Rent, Electricity, gas and fuel, Internet and phone and Groceries.
